When I landed on Osalt, I thought, “Yeah this is cool… I can grab some free appz until I can afford to trade up…” but amazingly (perhaps only for me), I am now slowly but surely bumping all my commercial appz out of the picture and replacing them with these open source alternatives (For example, Open will now be developed in Aptana Studio {and the unbelievably versatile Notepad ++} instead of Dreamweaver). What really amazes me about the current state of open source applications is, well, how good (as opposed to adequate) they actually are. Okay, so some aren’t perfect and some are downright non-runners (avoid Songbird, the iTunes alternative built on the Mozilla platform) and some user experience design touches wouldn’t go amiss, but overall, it’s very difficult to fault these apps in comparrison to commercial rivals.
Check it yeah!
